16 years later: Princesses recreate iconic championship pose as Spain win again

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a thrilling battle to become the greatest football team in the world in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. With a poignant portrayal of the Royal Family, this historic victory—celebrated by the Spanish worldwide—became unforgettable.

Exactly 16 years after Spain's first World Cup victory in 2010, Princesses Leonor and Sofia of the Spanish Royal Family reenacted their iconic trophy pose. The two sisters reproduced their 2010 childhood photo while participating in the trophy celebration on the green turf following the title.

King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía joined over 80,000 other spectators at New York New Jersey Stadium, where the Spanish royal family traveled specifically to attend the game.

The royal couple has previously traveled with one of their daughters at a time, but this is apparently the royal family's first significant international trip as a group of four.

Additionally, Leonor and Sofia had never seen the World Cup Final before because they were too small to be present when Spain advanced to the finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The princesses continued to celebrate Spain's victory sixteen years ago despite this.

When Felipe and Letizia hosted the squad at the palace in Madrid following their historic 2010 victory, the young royals, who were only three and four years old at the time, were prominently displayed in similar jerseys.

Now, Leonor, 20, and Sofía, 19, were able to witness their team's victory on Sunday (local time) from some of the best seats in the house.
