RGV lauds violence in Dhurandhar, feels other films treat it as spectacle minus context - did he take a dig at Toxic?

Ram Gopal Varma has been a huge admirer of Dhurandhar since its first installment. The director has time and again praised the Ranveer Singh-starrer. Earlier today, the director revealed what every filmmaker should understand from the Aditya Dhar directorial. According to him, the spy thriller is full of living and breathing characters who seem as real as everyone sitting and watching the movie in a theatre. In his opinion, Ranveer's Dhurandhar doesn't treat its hero as a walking poster who has to be worshipped at all costs. He further revealed violience in this movie differs from other projects.

Lauding Dhurandhar, Ram Gopal Varma stated that a hero in Aditya Dhar's spy thriller can be non existent in the room, can wait tables and listen instead of speaking. He believes the hero can also miscalculate, get dirty and smaller in front of other smaller character. The camera doesn't elevate, it watches; he added.

"Rehman Dakait does not exist to look iconic in a still.. he exists as a man with a specific laugh, a specific fear, a specific way of holding a gun or a stare . The politician, the cop, the cousin, the juice shop friend none of them feel hired to decorate the star. They feel like people who would still be there whether the hero was there or not . You are not waiting for the next elevation shot," he wrote.

Conitunuing to share his thoughts, RGV said that audiences stay in theatres because people on-screen make them stay by becoming immersive. According to him, violence in Dhurandhar has a before and after.

"Somebody pays. Somebody changes. Somebody is left standing feeling smaller. In the other films, violence is just a spectacle minus context . Attitude is the plot. Style arrives first and th n searches for a reason. The camera does not observe, it advertises. Editing does not cut time, it manufactures fake intensity that was never in the writing," added Ram Gopal Varma.

On the work front, Ram Gopal Varma's last directorial project was Shapadham. It was theatrically released in 2024. Next up, the filmmaker is working on Police Station Mein Bhoot. It features Manoj Bajpayee, Genelia Deshmukh, and Ramya Krishnan. While no official release date has been announced, it is expected to hit the silver screen in 2026.
