Aamir Khan reacts to fatwa over marriage with Gauri Spratt: 'Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion'

Days after tying the knot with Gauri Spratt in a private ceremony under the Special Marriage Act, Aamir Khan has addressed the controversy surrounding his marriage after a fatwa was issued against him.

The actor, who married Gauri at his Mumbai residence on July 5 in the presence of close family and friends, responded to the criticism by highlighting the diversity within his own family and clarifying that none of his marriages involved religious conversion.

The controversy began after Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, issued a fatwa stating that under Sharia law, a Muslim man cannot marry a non-Muslim woman unless she embraces Islam. The cleric termed Aamir and Gauri's marriage impermissible under Islamic law.

The issue soon entered the political arena as Maharashtra BJP minister Nitesh Rane also criticised the marriage, calling it an instance of "love jihad."

Reacting to both the fatwa and the political remarks in an interview with Rediff, Aamir dismissed the criticism while speaking about the secular nature of his family.

"The truth is that ours is a very inclusive family. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is also married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian."

The actor also made it clear that religion was never a condition in any of his marriages.

"Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes," Aamir shared.

Aamir first introduced Gauri Spratt to the public during the celebrations for his 60th birthday in 2025, confirming that the two were in a relationship. Since then, the couple have frequently been spotted together at public events, family gatherings and industry functions, with Gauri also sharing a warm bond with Aamir's family.

This marks Aamir's third marriage. The actor was first married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002. The former couple share two children, Ira and Junaid. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. Although they announced their separation in 2021, the two have continued to maintain an amicable relationship and co-parent their son, Azad.
