Andor Won't Continue With Season 3; Here's Why Creator Changed His Mind
Andor Season 3 will end on May 13 on Disney+ (JioHotstar in India), and so will the Star Wars prequel. Since its premiere in September 2022, the series has received much critical acclaim, calling it one of the best Star Wars series. Originally, the show was set to run for five seasons, but during the production of Season 1, creator and writer Tony Gilroy realised the scope of the show was much too ambitious. He changed his mind and set up a new plan for the show. Find out what he said about the turnabout.
Why Tony Gilroy reduced Andor down to two seasons
Gilroy, who is also showrunner on the Disney+ show, had planned to have five seasons lasting 12 episodes. He told Empire magazine that once he began making the first season, he realised how unrealistic the five-season play was. He said, "Oh my God, we are going to have to come up with another 12 hours of story? So I was already panicked. We already said we were going to do five years [of timeline], that was the concept. How do you get out of that?"While he was having a drink with lead actor Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor, a plan was somehow formed. The second season has 12 episodes, but they are divided into four portions of three episodes each. Each of these four portions covers roughly a year of Cassian's life in which the Rebel Alliance grows stronger. It directly leads into the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, directed by Gareth Edwards.
Open door for spinoffs
Another reason why there is no third season of Andor is the cost. According to a Forbes report, the second season cost nearly $300 million, while the first was $250 million. Both seasons were shot over five years and use practical effects, sets, and location shoots rather than greenscreen. And even if the door is closed on Cassian Andor's story, the Star Wars universe can explore another character or two in any future shows. Adria Arjona, who plays Bix Calleen, has stated that she would love to come back for a spinoff on her character.
